Report on the 28th September Tutorial

On September 28th, Dr Robert David gave a really excellent talk at Thirlmere Recreation Hall on the resources available to those in the parish of St John’s, Castlerigg and Wythburn who are interested in researching their house histories. He illustrated his talk with pictures of some of the documents to look at, including the census records. (Those who would like to see these for themselves, please contact Geoff Darrall, (017687 74500) who has a set of census discs.)

Dr David circulated some notes with his talk; anyone unable to be there can get a copy from Geoff Darrall. However, these notes have now been added to our project web-site together with transcripts of the census’s for 1841, 1871 and 1881. The website also contains a lot of other useful resource information and can be found at www.adamscross.co.uk.

The planned visit to the Archives Centre at Carlisle has had to be postponed since the move to new premises has been delayed. Please note the new provisional date: Wed, January 12th, 2011, from 10-30 to 1-30pm.

However, the previously arranged date in November, Tuesday 23rd, will not be wasted as it has been decided to have an evening in Thirlmere Recreation Hall at 7-30pm, when people can bring any maps, photo’s or other material which would be of general interest to everyone.

At this meeting it is hoped to have a display of pictures by Patrick Holmes, of various houses in the parish, some from the air.

Those who borrowed the draft copies of the notes on their houses, and who have discovered additional information which could be added may bring the notes along to the meeting. The other house histories will be on view as they were on September 28th.
